Thought Pieces

What should organisations do to promote greater innovation?

Wednesday, 11 July 2012

What happens when you work in an organization where innovative thoughts and actions are not promoted or welcomed, usually you have limited choices (either you leave, stay or suck it up.)

This video sums up the thoughts of different leading speakers from Ci2011 on promoting innovation in an organisation.  It’s all about encouraging experimentation and risk taking. It’s about creating a supportive environment in which people feel free to express their ideas without the fear of criticism or ridicule. As Sir Gus Nossal AC says “Innovation is not a cost to an organisation, but an investment.”

Watch this video for ideas on how you can encourage innovation in your own organisation!

Self Actualization or Survival? Innovation for Food Security

Saturday, 7 July 2012

Alison Watkins is Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ASX listed agribusiness GrainCorp Limited. She is also a non-executive director of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited.

In her Ci2011 presentation, Alison addresses the issue of “food security”. For most of us, feeding our families is not a concern.. our kids’ idea of deprivation is not having the latest iPhone.

When we see images of starving children, we just accept this as the way the world is, and that there’s nothing we can do. And the situation is getting worse…

So how do we go from being in the stands, thinking “what can I do?” to being on the playing field? Alison delivers some real, tangible steps you can take to start making a difference today, along with some shocking statistics:
  • Did you know 925 million people are hungry, while 1.5 billion people are obese?
  • In the US, 25 – 50% of food prepared for human consumption is thrown out? and
  • In Australia, the cost of the food we throw out annually is the same as it takes to run our army?
Some food for thought…

The Principles of Design Thinking and the Power of Play

Wednesday, 4 July 2012

Brendan Boyle’s presentation at Ci2011 is extremely inspiring. As a leading design thinker, Partner at IDEO and Professor at Stanford University’s d.School, he spoke about building up your creative confidence and believes that innovation is right at the edge of ridiculous ideas and that an environment is needed which isn’t quite so judgemental about a ridiculous idea. “Most people think that the opposite of play is work (especially in the corporate world) but the opposite is boredom or even depression.” –Brendan Boyle

Many people tend to think that work is work and play is childish and it’s only for kids. And when they try to integrate it, they treat it separately from the work. The core difference that Mr. Boyle is trying to make is that play is part of the innovation process not just something you do when you roll out the ping pong tables at a specific time. If a space that allows for play can help encourage some silly ideas then you’ll come up with some possibly absurd but potentially groundbreaking ideas.

Looking from the outside in – how to innovate in a crisis

Wednesday, 13 June 2012

By: Tania de Jong

2012 continues to be precarious. The global economy swings between signs of recovery and predictions of imminent collapse. Businesses appear paralysed. Though many are cash-rich, they’re risk-averse, strategically incremental and lacking in fresh ideas and innovation.

The challenge of the 21st century is to transform our organisations to adapt flexibly and rapidly to the ever changing and volatile environments we face.

We will have to reduce cost structures while increasing productivity, adopt new ways of working and invent business models that challenge old ways of thinking.

We have to maintain our commitment to innovation and growth even as we make the transition away from core businesses that have served us so well in the past.

The world needs leadership, invention and courage now more than ever. We need audacity not austerity.

It is a high stakes race to position ourselves to respond effectively to the dynamic challenges emerging around us.

Buckling down internally and struggling to approach innovation isn’t going to cut it; we will neglect to innovate or impact the outside world we operate in. Placing increasing expectations on government hasn’t worked either.

Rather than focus on our own organisations and individual sectors, its time to look from the outside in.

Cross-fertilisation of ideas is the name of the game for 2012 and in its third successful year, Creative Innovation 2012 will address big, wicked, problems that improve the economy and society as a whole.

Together we will learn, share and discover bold ideas and great business opportunities that spark a revolution for courage and change. We will come together; business, academia, government and not-for-profit and there’ll be international minds present too.

Ci2012 is the place to learn from world changing innovators, futurists, inspired thinkers and curious souls gathered together in an interactive community. From anthropology to technology, from economics to art and from entrepreneurship to science, Ci2012 brings together leading national and international minds to solve society’s wicked problems and provide its findings to the Australian government for review and comment.
