Brendan Boyle’s presentation at Ci2011 is extremely inspiring. As a leading design thinker, Partner at IDEO and Professor at Stanford University’s d.School, he spoke about building up your creative confidence and believes that innovation is right at the edge of ridiculous ideas and that an environment is needed which isn’t quite so judgemental about a ridiculous idea. “Most people think that the opposite of play is work (especially in the corporate world) but the opposite is boredom or even depression.” –Brendan Boyle
Many people tend to think that work is work and play is childish and it’s only for kids. And when they try to integrate it, they treat it separately from the work. The core difference that Mr. Boyle is trying to make is that play is part of the innovation process not just something you do when you roll out the ping pong tables at a specific time. If a space that allows for play can help encourage some silly ideas then you’ll come up with some possibly absurd but potentially groundbreaking ideas.
